SOPA Awareness Project

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 17, 2012, 1:27 PM
As you may know, the US congress is planning to pass an anti-piracy legislation (SOPA) in one week, and this bill will allow the government to not only block access to websites for US residents, but also to take down any website with one court order. This means many sites we are using now (including dA) will be in danger of closing and this will be affecting everyone outside of the US.
To read more about it, there. Have the wiki article. (wikipedia will close for 24 hours shortly in protest of SOPA, though...)

I am posting this journal to help spread the word about :iconkaytseki:'s project of awareness, and if we all get involved we could be able to bring awareness to this subject and eventually help to stop this bill from passing.

All we have to do is spread the word with... drawings!
A week is a very short time to create something, so the project will only ask for a sketch (it can even just be a black and white doodle~) with the censor bar as the central theme. Please don't be afraid of being creative with this, the censor bar can take on different forms and textures~

If you do decide to join, please upload the work onto any social website between Jan 20th-24th! The more the better! As many social websites will be taking hits from the bill once it passes into law.

The goal of this project is to bring as many artists together as possible! It is an open project so if anyone else is interested, please forward them this message : )

Thanks for reading!

(I based the journal on Kay's words, I hope she doesn't mind ;v; )

have you ever seen something blurred or cut out from something like tv or artwork? well that's because it's being "censored". a "Censor Bar" is that big black rectangle that covers alot of the artwork to "censor" it from the public. alot of artwork on DA is using those black bars across the eyes to represent censoring our view of things. you can see =MissRadio's link right above your question :)

also, thanks for wanting to help~! SOPA is a load of **CENSORED** (YES, pun intended b/c of conversation ^^; )

Hmmm... I 'll hopefully be able to draw something for this. It just doesn't make sense, whatever happened to freedom of speech?

This SOPA thing seems incredibly troubling. Just by having a link on the page to a questionable site could lead to a site being shut down. And the method that would be used to block these sites is similar to what is being used in China and Iran. The only reason this bill is being considered is to protect the interests of major corporations. I also hear it is a threat to proxy servers which are used by dissident groups in oppressive regimes, like the ones who protested during the Arab Spring and operate in Iran, because proxy services could be seen as violating this law.
